University campus representing studying in Canada

Canada is one of the world's top destinations for international students, attracting over 800,000 new study permit holders each year. But navigating the document requirements for a Canadian study permit can be confusing. The primary application form is IMM 1294 (Application for a Study Permit Made Outside of Canada), and getting your document package right from the start dramatically improves your approval odds.

This guide covers every document you need, explains what officers look for, and includes tips specific to 2026 — including updated Student Direct Stream (SDS) requirements and the newer Student Financial Instructions (SFI) framework.

1. The Acceptance Letter from a DLI

Your Designated Learning Institution (DLI) acceptance letter is the cornerstone of your study permit application. IRCC will not process your application without it. This letter must come from a school on IRCC's official DLI list — a searchable database on canada.ca.

Acceptance Letter Requirements

Tip: Check the DLI List Before accepting an offer, verify your school appears on the IRCC DLI list at canada.ca. Schools can be removed from the list, and a study permit cannot be issued for a non-DLI school.

2. Proof of Financial Support

IRCC requires proof that you can pay for your tuition, living expenses, and return transportation. The financial requirements were updated in 2024 and remain in effect for 2026. As a general guide, you need to demonstrate funds covering your first year of tuition plus at least CAD $20,635 for living costs (more for Quebec).

Financial Documents

3. Language Test Results

Most applicants need to demonstrate language proficiency. For English programs, IRCC and DLIs typically accept IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, or CELPIP. For French programs, TEF Canada or TCF Canada are standard. Requirements vary by institution, so check your DLI's specific minimums.

Accepted Language Tests

Important Language test scores must typically be no more than 2 years old at the time of application. Check your test's expiry and re-take if needed before applying.

4. Statement of Purpose / Letter of Explanation

Your Statement of Purpose (SOP) is a critical document. It explains why you chose Canada, why this specific school and program, how it fits your career goals, and why you will return home after graduation. A weak or generic SOP is a common reason for refusals.

Address these key points: your academic background, your reasons for choosing the specific program and institution, your financial plan, your career goals, and your ties to your home country that assure your return after study.

5. Biometrics (Fingerprints and Photo)

Almost all study permit applicants between ages 14 and 79 must provide biometrics. After submitting your application online, IRCC sends a Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL). You then book an appointment at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) or Application Support Centre within 30 days. The biometrics fee is CAD $85 per person.

6. Medical Examination

A medical exam is required if your study program is longer than 6 months, or if you plan to work in healthcare, childcare, or eldercare settings. You must use an IRCC-approved panel physician. Results are valid for 12 months and are submitted electronically by the physician — you do not submit the results yourself.

8. Transcripts and Academic Records

Include certified copies (official translations if not in English or French) of:

9. Student Direct Stream (SDS) — Faster Processing

If you are a citizen of one of the SDS-eligible countries (including India, China, Philippines, Vietnam, Morocco, Senegal, Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines), you can apply through the Student Direct Stream for faster processing (typically 20 calendar days).

10. Costs and Application Fees

The study permit application fee is CAD $150. The biometrics fee is CAD $85. If you need to include a visitor visa (TRV) with your study permit, the combined fee is CAD $235. If you are applying from inside Canada to extend your study permit, the fee remains CAD $150 but you use form IMM 5709 instead.
